Kid At Heart
3 Day, 2 Night Suggested
Day One
It all starts with a ride on the Duquesne Incline to the top of Mt. Washington. There you will thrill at the view of downtown Pittsburgh that USA Weekend ranked as the second best view in America!
Continue your exploration at the Senator John Heinz History Center. The History Center brings the past of Pittsburgh and Southwestern PA to life through fascinating exhibits focused on life in the Steel City and its environs. Don't miss the Western PA Sports Museum! After all, what's the history of Pittsburgh without Franco, Mario, Roberto and the gang?
The National Aviary is just across the Allegheny River from the History Center. Over 600 birds from around the world are displayed in naturalistic exhibits at the nation's premiere bird park. The Aviary is a high-flying time with our feathered friends that is not to be missed during your visit!
The Carnegie Science Center brings science and fun together for all ages. The Carnegie Science Center encourages you to let your imagination run wild - and, you might learn something in the process! Hands on exhibits encourage children of all ages to explore and discover the wonders of our world. Tour a WW II submarine, marvel at an Omnimax film, or tour Southwestern PA via miniature railroad, all under one roof.
The Gateway Clipper Fleet has the perfect solution to the question, "What can I do with my students in the evening?" Enjoy a cruise along Pittsburgh's famous Three Rivers (can you name them?) as you feast on great food and cool tunes. An activity and a great dinner, all without moving the coach! By the way, if you said the Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio Rivers, move to the front of the class!
Day Two
Just a short drive east of downtown brings you to the Oakland section of Pittsburgh. Renowned as the home of the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University, Oakland also is home to several great Pittsburgh attractions. The Nationality Rooms at the University of Pittsburgh is a one of a kind attraction that defies description. Located in the inspiring Cathedral of Learning on the Pitt campus, each of the 26 classrooms reflects the culture and heritage of one of the area's diverse ethnic groups, and represents that nationality's contribution to the fabric of Pittsburgh. Through authentic design and decoration, each classroom evokes the soul of the world's peoples in Pittsburgh. Visit the classroom that represents your heritage and establish your own emotional bond with the peoples of Pittsburgh!
The The Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History combine two world-renowned museums in one unforgettable visit. Discover dinosaurs, sparkling gems, ancient Egyptian treasures, and African and North American wildlife in the Museum of Natural History. Then, marvel at the Museum of Art's collections of American art, Impressionist paintings, furniture, architecture, and more. Additionally, The Carnegie International Art Exhibit is held every four years, and showcases emerging artists from around the world. The Carnegie Museums will take your breath away!
Station Square is your leisure time stop for the day. Just across the Monongahela River from downtown, Station Square features great shopping, food, fun, and more on the restored site of one of Pittsburgh's vast railroad yards. The Grand Concourse Restaurant, Hard Rock Café, Joe's Crab Shack, Bessemer Court and the Gateway Clipper Fleet all make Station Square a must for groups. There is also performance space in the complex for those visiting with orchestras, stage bands, and choirs.
Enjoy your evening in the Pittsburgh Cultural District, the city's entertainment and cultural nerve center. Located in the heart of downtown and within walking distance of most major hotels, restaurants, and shopping, the Cultural District is the place for the best of musical theater, ballet, modern dance, classic and popular music, drama, and the visual arts. Take your pick - the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Pittsburgh CLO, Pittsburgh Opera, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, the Pittsburgh Public Theater and other cultural institutions all call the Cultural District home. And what a home - many of these entities perform in opulent, restored theaters such as Heinz Hall, The Benedum and Byham Theaters, or in newer halls such as the O'Reilly Theater. Many offer fascinating backstage programs that may include a short clinic with one of the performers. Make sure you get some culture while you're in town!
Day Three
Only one stop today, and it's all about fun! Pittsburgh is proud to be the home of Kennywood Park, America's finest traditional amusement park and a national historic landmark. Thrill to five different roller coasters, great food, and a little Pittsburgh history, all only minutes from downtown. Kennywood loves students, and those who perform get special treatment, with pavilions available for awards ceremonies, stages on which to perform, and special park recognition for your group. Don't rush, you'll need the entire day for Kennywood!
Finish your day with free time in the Strip District, Pittsburgh's hot, happening shopping and entertainment district. The Strip is a microcosm of multiculturalism, with ethnic foods, shops, and boutique businesses sure to inspire any traveler. Spend some time in the Strip, for an afternoon you'll never forget!
