Art Lovers' Pittsburgh
2 Day, 1 Night Suggested
Day One
The Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History combine two world renowned museums in one unforgettable visit. Discover dinosaurs, sparkling gems, ancient Egyptian treasures, and African and North American wildlife in the Museum of Natural History. Then, marvel at the Museum of Art's collections of American art, Impressionist paintings, furniture, architecture, and more. Additionally, The Carnegie International Art Exhibit is held every four years, and showcases emerging artists from around the world. The Carnegie Museums will take your breath away!
Next, step back in time at the Frick Art and Historical Center. This restored estate of industrialist Henry Clay Frick features Clayton, a stunning turn of the century mansion; the Frick Art Museum, featuring a permanent collection of early Renaissance, French, and Flemish paintings, as well as visiting exhibits; and the historic car and carriage museum. See how the titans of industry lived during the era of Big Steel at the Frick!
Continue your Oakland exploration at the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. This Schenley Park jewel has delighted plant and flower enthusiasts for over 100 years. Housed in what is considered to be one of the largest and finest Victorian glasshouses in the country, the glass display rooms at the Phipps feature tropical, desert, regional, flowering, and fruit displays, as well as fabulous seasonal displays. The Phipps is your botanical oasis in the heart of Pittsburgh!
Day Two
Delve into the world of "pop art" at the Andy Warhol Museum. The most comprehensive single artist museum in the world houses more than 3,000 works of art from America's original Prince of Pop. Six floors of galleries, a film theater, an Archives Study Center, and an Education Resource Center are yours to explore and experience life through the lens of Warhol, who, by the way, was a native Pittsburgher!
Experience another one of a kind arts experience at The Mattress Factory. A museum of contemporary art that commissions, exhibits, and collects new site-specific installations that artists create in residency, the Mattress Factory is hailed as the best facility for installation art in the United States.
Next, move to the Strip District, Pittsburgh's hip shopping and entertainment district for a visit to the Society for Contemporary Craft, one of the few arts organizations in the U.S. dedicated to building a wide appreciation of contemporary craft from around the world. Cutting edge work by established and emerging craft artists are showcased, with some even offered for sale!
