West Penn Allegheny Health System (WPAHS) is comprised of two tertiary and four community hospitals. Offering a comprehensive range of medical and surgical services, the hospitals serve Pittsburgh and the surrounding five-state area, house more than 2,000 beds and employ more than 13,000 people. St. Clair Hospital is an independent community hospital providing comprehensive, high quality care to the residents of Southwestern Pennsylvania. The hospital’s main campus is located just outside of downtown Pittsburgh in the South Hills.
Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh is the only hospital in western Pennsylvania devoted solely to the care of infants, children and young adults. The hospital has been named consistently to several elite lists of pediatric health care facilities, including ranking eighth among children’s hospitals (FY 2003) in funding provided by the National Institutes of Health. The hospital also is renowned for cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, critical care medicine, diabetes, hematology/oncology, neurosurgery, organ and tissue transplantation, orthopaedics, otolaryngology (ENT) and pediatric surgery. Children’s Hospital is also the only accredited Level 1 Regional Resource Pediatric Trauma Center in western Pennsylvania and one of only three in the state.
UPMC Eye Center, the Department of Ophthalmology of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, has one of the top basic and clinical research programs in the country. Ranked 12th last year in National Eye Institute funding, UPMC Eye Center’s research focuses on ocular immunology, infectious disease, molecular genetics and molecular biology of retinal disease, glaucoma, and advanced diagnostic imaging technology development. Ophthalmology Times has ranked the UPMC Eye Center among the top 10 ophthalmology programs in the United States in the delivery of patient care.
University Ear, Nose, and Throat Specialists, also known as the Department of Otolaryngology, includes Board-certified physicians, fellows, and residents, as well as speech language pathologists and audiologists. The physicians in the practice provide the entire range of otolaryngology services to patients throughout the region as well as the world, and is consistently ranked among the nation’s top 10 Ear, Nose, and Throat specialists by U.S. News & World Report
Magee-Womens Hospital of University of Pittsburgh Medical Center is a full-service women's hospital and is one of only five not-for-profit hospitals in the United States dedicated to the care of women throughout all stages of life. Magee serves as the teaching facility for obstetrics, gynecology, gynecologic oncology, and neonatology for the University of Pittsburgh. Members of the hospital's medical staff hold academic appointments at the university and are actively involved in education and research, as well as patient care.
UPMC Montefiore is a member of the UPMC Presbyterian family of hospitals. UPMC Shadyside is a 486-bed tertiary care hospital that has been serving the residents of Pittsburgh and the tristate area since 1866. UPMC Shadyside offers primary medical care; physician and nursing education; and a broad range of specialties that include cardiology, oncology, orthopaedics, geriatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, vascular medicine, endocrinology, and more.
